Program Overview

JCRHC offers two types of job shadowing experiences:

Observation Only

Watch and learn without interacting directly with patients.

Patient Contact

Engage in limited patient interaction under supervision. (Must be 18+)

Each experience is designed to give you valuable exposure to the healthcare field in a safe and professional setting. Placement is dependent on staff availability, department approval, and application completeness.

Program Information

Applications

To apply for the Job Shadowing Program at Jackson County Regional Health Center, please complete the required forms and submit them at least two weeks prior to your preferred shadow date.

Observation Only

Most high school and college students will be approved for observation only. This level of job shadowing does not include direct patient contact and allows students to explore careers in a healthcare setting under supervision.

Required Documentation:

  • Completed application
  • Copy of immunization record Influenza vaccination within the last 12 months
  • MMR (titer or proof of two immunizations)
  • Varicella (titer or proof of two immunizations)
  • COVID vaccination (if applicable)
Patient Contact

Patient contact shadowing is reserved for students currently enrolled in an applicable healthcare program such as Nursing, Radiology, Laboratory, Physical Therapy, or Occupational Therapy.

Required Documentation:

  • Completed application
  • Mandatory Reporter Verification (Dependent Adult & Child) CPR certification (American Heart Association approved)
  • Copy of immunization record Influenza vaccination within the last 12 months
  • MMR (titer or proof of two immunizations)
  • Varicella (titer or proof of two immunizations)
  • Tuberculosis screening (Quantiferon Gold or T Spot preferred; 2-step TB test accepted)
  • COVID vaccination (if applicable)
Requirements

All documentation must be submitted and approved prior to the start of your shadowing experience. Additional health and safety protocols include:

  • Flu Season Compliance: An influenza vaccine is required for all participants during flu season, per JCRHC infection control policy.
  • Tobacco-Free Campus: JCRHC is a tobacco-free facility. This applies to all buildings and outdoor grounds.
Conduct & Dress Code

At JCRHC, your appearance and behavior reflect our professional standards and commitment to patient care.

Dress Code:

  • Dress modestly and neatly; no sleeveless tops, tight or revealing clothing.
  • Avoid extreme hairstyles or visible body piercings (eyebrows, tongue, lips, nose).
  • Tattoos should be covered when possible.
  • No T-shirts with suggestive or inappropriate graphics.
  • No flip-flops, rubber shoes, or blue jeans (unless pre-approved).
  • Undergarments must be covered at all times.

Conduct Expectations:

  • Cellphones and Devices: Personal use is prohibited during shadowing hours. Step outside the patient area if a call is necessary.
  • Identification: Wear your school ID or JCRHC-provided badge at all times to distinguish you from visitors and patients.

Common Questions

What’s the difference between observation only and patient contact shadowing?
Observation only means no direct interaction with patients, while patient contact allows hands-on experience under supervision — but only for students in specific programs and with the required documentation.
How long does the job shadow last?
Shadowing length varies by department and availability. This will be discussed and scheduled once your application is reviewed and approved.
Will I receive credit or pay for shadowing?
No. The program is an unpaid learning opportunity and does not offer academic credit unless arranged through your school.
Can I use my cellphone during the shadow?
No. Personal devices should not be used during shadowing hours. If you need to take a call, please step outside of the patient care area.
