General Surgery Instructions

  • Arrive one hour before your scheduled procedure to allow time for check-in and paperwork.

  • Enter through the main hospital entrance and stop at the registration desk. Wheelchairs are available if needed.

  • Bring a list of your medications, or the medications in their original containers.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.

  • Bring a driver. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home after your procedure.

  • If you use a CPAP machine, bring it with you.

  • Avoid bringing money or valuables. Wear comfortable clothing for your trip home.

  • Notify your care team if you are taking Aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, Ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning medications. These may need to be stopped several days before surgery.

  • If taking any diabetic medications or medications for weight loss follow the instructions given to you at your appointment. Call with any questions. 

  • Stop all over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements one week before surgery unless your doctor says it’s safe to continue.

  • Follow any pre-operative bathing or hygiene instructions provided by your care team.

Common Questions

Do I need a referral for surgery?

Yes. Most procedures require a referral from your primary care provider or a specialist.

Are all surgeries performed at Jackson County Hospital?

Many outpatient and inpatient procedures are available on-site. Some complex surgeries may be referred to a higher-level facility.

Will I go home the same day?

On a rare occasion an overnight stay may be required. Your provider will discuss these risk, when applicable.

Will I receive anesthesia?

Yes. Sedation or anesthesia is provided and monitored by trained anesthesia professionals.

Can I eat or drink before surgery?

No. You should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your procedure, unless instructed otherwise.

Can I drive myself home after surgery?

No. You must arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure. Your driver must stay within the city limits during your procedure.
