Magnetic Resonance Imaging

See More with MRI Scanning

Jackson County Hospital now offers onsite MRI services, a powerful, noninvasive diagnostic tool that uses magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of nearly every structure and organ in the body. This advanced technology helps providers evaluate soft tissues—such as the brain, spine, joints, and internal organs—with exceptional clarity, all without the use of radiation.

What to Expect

  • Most MRI scans take 30 to 60 minutes.
  • You will lie on a table that moves into a large, tunnel-like machine.
  • The scan is painless but may be noisy; earplugs or music may be offered.
  • No special preparation is usually required.
  • You may wear your own clothing unless it contains metal, such as:
    • Zippers, buttons, or underwires
    • Jewelry, hearing aids, or hair accessories
  • Always inform your provider if you have implanted medical devices or any history of metal work exposure.

Important Safety Notes

  • You may not be able to have an MRI if you have:
    • Cerebral aneurysm clips
    • Certain heart valves or pacemakers
    • Cochlear implants
    • Metal fragments in the eye
  • If you’ve ever worked with metal (e.g., welding or grinding), your provider may order X-rays before your MRI to ensure safety.

FAQS

Common Questions

Is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) safe?

Yes, it is safe for most people. However, individuals with certain implants or metal fragments may not be eligible.Answer here

Do I need to prepare for an MRI?

Most exams require no prep. Avoid wearing metal and inform your provider about any implants or past surgeries.

What if I’m claustrophobic?

Talk to your doctor beforehand. They may prescribe a mild sedative, and you’ll need someone to drive you home after the scan.

Does the scan hurt?

No. It’s a noninvasive procedure. You’ll need to lie still, and the machine makes loud sounds, but there is no pain involved.

Is contrast dye used?

Occasionally, an MRI may require contrast to improve image quality. Your provider will let you know in advance if this applies.

When will I get results?

A radiologist will interpret the images and send results to your provider, usually within 1–2 business days.
