2D & 3D Mammography

Early Detection Against Breast Cancer

Jackson County Hospital offers digital 2D and 3D mammography to support early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Mammograms are performed by experienced technologists and interpreted by radiologists using high-resolution digital imaging for enhanced accuracy and speed.

What to Expect

  • Your breast will be positioned on a flat surface, then gently compressed with a paddle to spread out the tissue.
  • Compression may be uncomfortable but should not be painful.
  • Each breast will be imaged from multiple angles.
  • The exam typically takes 15–20 minutes.
  • Please avoid wearing deodorants, powders, lotions, or perfumes on the day of your mammogram — these may interfere with image clarity.

Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammography

Screening

Screening mammograms are for women with no symptoms, recommended annually starting at age 40 by the American Cancer Society. Routine mammograms do not require an order from your primary care provider.

Diagnostic Mammography

Diagnostic mammograms are for those with symptoms such as:

  • Breast pain or lumps
  • Skin dimpling or thickening

FAQS

Common Questions

What’s the difference between 2D and 3D mammograms?

3D mammography captures multiple angles and creates thin image slices, making it easier to detect small or hidden abnormalities, especially in dense breast tissue.

Is mammography safe?

Yes. Mammograms use a low dose of radiation, and the benefits of early detection far outweigh the risks.

Does the exam hurt?

Some patients feel discomfort from compression, but it only lasts a few seconds per image and is necessary for the best results.

How should I prepare for my mammogram?

Do not apply deodorant, powder, lotion, or perfume under your arms or on your breasts the day of the exam. Wear a two-piece outfit for convenience.

How long will it take?

Most mammograms take 15–20 minutes, with results typically sent to your provider within a few business days.

How often should I get a mammogram?

Women age 40 and older should receive a screening mammogram every year, or as recommended by their healthcare provider.
